Deleting a household
This page covers how to permanently delete a household, who can do it, and how to cancel during the grace period. Deleting a household removes it for everyone who shares it, not just you.
Who can delete a household
Only an Owner can delete a household, and only when you belong to more than one. The Delete Household option is hidden if the household you're viewing is your only one — in that case, deleting it would leave you with nowhere to work, so you'd use Delete your account instead.
How to delete a household
Switch to the household you want to delete, then open Settings → Household. Under Delete Household, click Delete Household… and confirm.
What happens right away
As soon as you confirm:
- The household is scheduled for deletion but not yet erased.
- Every member is signed out of that household, and no one can open it.
- Any pending invitations to the household are revoked.
- We email you a confirmation with a cancellation link.
Members who belong to other households keep working in those normally — only the deleted household becomes inaccessible.
The 30-day grace period
Nothing is permanently removed for 30 days. During that window the household and its data are retained but inaccessible. A few days before the deadline, owners receive a reminder email with the deletion date and the cancellation link.
Changing your mind
Use the cancellation link in any of the deletion emails to restore the household within the grace period. Once restored, members can open it again and pick up where they left off.
After the grace period
When the 30 days elapse, the household is permanently deleted, along with all of its accounts, transactions, categories, rules, and reminders. This is irreversible, and owners receive a final email confirming the deletion is complete.
Households deleted with their owner
If a household had a single owner and that owner deleted their account, the household was scheduled for deletion automatically as part of that. It can't be restored on its own — it comes back only if that owner cancels their account deletion. See Deleting your account.
