Changing a member's role or removing them
Owners can change any member's role or remove them from the household. Both actions are in the Members table on the Settings page — pencil icon to edit, trash icon to remove.
Changing a role
- Open Settings from the profile panel in the top-left.
- In the Members section, find the member whose role you want to change.
- Click the pencil icon in their row.
- In the dialog, pick a new role:
- Viewer — Can view all data
- Editor — Can view and edit data
- Owner — Can perform all actions
- Click Save.
The change takes effect immediately. The member may need to refresh their browser to see new permissions (Settings appearing or disappearing, etc.).
Removing a member
- Click the trash icon in the member's row.
- Confirm the prompt ("Are you sure you want to remove X from your household?").
- Click Remove.
When a member is removed:
- They lose access to this household immediately. Any active browser sessions they have pointing at this household are invalidated.
- Their account stays intact. They can still sign in to LedgerBear and access any other households they belong to.
- All the data they created stays in the household. Transactions they entered aren't deleted.
Guardrails
A few things LedgerBear won't let you do:
- You can't remove the last Owner. Every household must have at least one Owner. Demote the last Owner to Editor? The system refuses. Remove the last Owner? Refused. Promote someone else to Owner first.
- You can't remove yourself if you're the only Owner. Same principle — the household would end up without an admin. Promote another member to Owner first, then remove yourself.
- You can't change your own role to something lower if you're the only Owner. Same reason.
If you really want to leave a household you're the only Owner of, either invite someone else as an Owner and then leave, or delete the household's content and abandon the workspace. (Deleting a whole household isn't currently a self-serve feature; contact us if you need that.)
